Two police officers in KwaZulu Natal were shot while attending to separate domestic violence cases. These incidents have once again highlighted the dangers that law enforcement officials face in the line of duty.

Incident 1: Othongathi Area

Early this morning, the first incident unfolded in the oThongathi area. The two officers had received a domestic violence complaint around 1:20 a.m. Armed with the information, they set off for the Magwaveni area to locate the victim. However, they encountered some difficulty finding the exact address.

After driving around for a while, the officers spotted two males standing at a distance. One of the policemen decided to approach them and inquire if they knew the complainant. To their dismay, as soon as the officer stepped out of the vehicle, the two men opened fire. Reacting swiftly, the policeman fired a shot in their direction, but unfortunately, he felt a sudden pain in his ankle and realized he had been shot. His colleague quickly rushed him to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

Incident 2: Chatsworth

In a separate incident, another police officer lost his life while responding to a domestic violence case in Chatsworth. The officers, accompanied by the complainant, arrived at a property in Welbedacht East. Tragically, as they entered the premises, one of the suspects fired shots through a window, hitting one of the officers above his bulletproof vest in the chest. Despite wearing protective gear, the officer sustained fatal injuries and tragically succumbed to them.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele, spokesperson for the KZN police, confirmed the details of both incidents, expressing deep sadness at the loss of one officer and the injury sustained by the other. The investigations into these incidents are currently underway, with authorities committed to bringing the culprits to justice.
