Malawi Court Orders Extradition of Shepherd Bushiri and Wife

LILONGWE, Malawi The Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Malawi has ordered that self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary Bushiri, be extradited back to South Africa.

The Bushiris are accused of fraud and money laundering in South Africa. They fled to Malawi in 2020 while on bail. Since then, South Africa has sought their return to face charges. The couple’s lawyer, Wapona Kita, said they plan to appeal the extradition ruling. They argue that the process is flawed and that their safety in South Africa isn’t assured.

South African authorities welcomed the court’s decision. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressed hope that the extradition would proceed swiftly, allowing the legal process to continue. Supporters of the Bushiris maintain their innocence, claiming they are victims of political persecution. Critics, however, point to their flight from South Africa as a sign of guilt.

The legal proceedings in Malawi have been lengthy. In 2020, Malawi’s Homeland Security Minister signed extradition papers following South Africa’s request. The case has seen multiple delays and legal challenges.

As the appeal process unfolds, the timeline for the Bushiris’ return to South Africa remains uncertain. Both governments have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served.
