Malawi found an Ethiopian migrant mass grave.

A mass grave of suspected Ethiopian migrants was found in Malawi.

Police said a mass grave has been found in the northern region of Malawi where authorities suspect the bodies of Ethiopian migrants were dumped.

Police spokesman Peter Kalaya told the news agency on Wednesday that the remains of 25 people were discovered buried in shallow graves about 250 km north of the capital, Lilongwe.

Peter said the grave was uncovered in Mzimba, in central Malawi, an area where local residents reported the mass grave to the police. Investigators believe the bodies were moved from a house in the village of Mzimba, where the migrants were living.

“Seventy-two Ethiopians have been arrested for ‘illegal entry’ which contravenes Malawi’s Immigration laws (and) ten Malawians have been arrested because we suspect they were aiding these illegal migrants through Malawi,” he added.

Malawi is a popular transit point for East African migrants looking to reach South Africa by road. Between January and September this year, police arrested 221 immigrants, with 186 people who were believed to be from Ethiopia.
