N3 accident kills 11 in pietermaritzburg
At least 11 people have died in a crash involving several cars on N3.
There was a significant accident in Pietermaritzburg early Saturday morning on the southbound side of the N3 between the Peter Brown and Chatterton offramps involving two trucks, a bakkie, two minibus taxis and five other vehicles. At seven in the morning, it was estimated that at least eleven people had already been declared dead.
Netcare 911 says that the accident caused a fully loaded taxi to catch on fire. Shawn Herbst, a spokesperson for Netcare 911, said that by the time emergency services got there, the fire had spread to other cars and engulfed the taxi and everyone in it.
Even though the official number of deaths had not been confirmed, emergency services said that the people in the taxi could not be saved.
