Nigerian court orders rooster to be slaughtered after noise complaint
A rooster in Nigeria has been condemned by a Nigerian court following a noise pollution complaint filed by two of its neighbors. According to local media reports, the court in the northern city of Kano has given the owner until Friday to slaughter the rooster. The neighbors complained that the bird’s relentless crowing deprived them of their sleep.
During the hearing, one of the neighbors, Yusuf Muhammed, argued that the rooster’s crowing was a violation of his right to a peaceful sleep. The court declared the cockerel a nuisance to the neighborhood and ordered the owner to ensure that the bird does not disturb the residents in the area.
The owner of the rooster, Isyaku Shu’aibu, told the court that he had bought the bird for Good Friday celebrations and asked to be allowed to keep it until the Christian holy day before slaughtering it for a family feast. Tuesday, Magistrate Halima Wali agreed to the request, but she told him to keep the bird from flying around and making noise.
In addition to slaughtering the rooster on friday, the owner was also ordered to ensure that he complies with the court’s ruling. Failure to do so will result in a penalty. The ruling has been widely reported in Nigerian media and has sparked a debate on social media about noise pollution and animal rights.
This decision by the Nigerian court highlights the need for proper consideration of the rights of animals and the impact of noise pollution on people’s health and well-being. The issue of noise pollution is becoming increasingly prevalent in Nigeria, and this case is a clear indication that people are willing to take action to address the problem, even if it means condemning a rooster in court.
