Rwanda Denies SADC Accusations Amid DRC Conflict Escalation
Gitega, February 2025 – In a firm rebuttal at the recent SADC Summit, Rwanda has vehemently denied accusations that its army, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), is engaged in offensive actions in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Rwandan officials stated that the RDF’s operations are solely defensive—aimed at protecting borders and civilians from armed groups operating in the region.
The controversy erupted after SADC leaders alleged that the RDF was involved in aggressive military actions in connection with the long-standing conflict involving M23 rebels. However, Rwanda countered by highlighting the role of SAMIDRC, a SADC-backed offensive force supporting the DRC government against the M23 insurgency and other rebel factions. According to Rwanda, the situation is further complicated by the involvement of Burundian forces, the notorious FDLR—a Hutu rebel group linked to past regional tensions—and even European mercenaries.
“Rwanda’s military posture remains one of defense,” an official spokesperson said. “Our forces are committed to securing our borders and safeguarding civilians, not initiating hostilities.” The statement also pointed out that the DRC government, led by President Félix Tshisekedi, has, through recent remarks, signaled intentions that could destabilize the region by provoking Rwanda.
