Nigeria’s House of Representatives blocks pornographic websites nationwide
On March 11, 2025, Nigeria’s House of Representatives directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct internet service providers to block all pornographic websites nationwide.
This decision came after a motion by Representative Dalhatu Tafoki, who expressed concern over the rising accessibility of explicit content online. He argued that such material negatively impacts societal values and promotes behaviors like adultery and prostitution.
Tafoki noted that many countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have laws banning pornography. He emphasized that Nigeria, being a religious nation, should uphold its moral standards by restricting access to obscene content.
The House urged the NCC to enforce this directive promptly and to sanction any internet service providers that fail to comply. They stressed the importance of protecting citizens, especially the youth, from the potential harms of unrestricted access to such material. This move reflects ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to regulate online content and preserve cultural and moral values in the digital age.
